Evidence of a continuous endoplasmic reticulum in the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica

   Abstract

Entamoeba histolytica, the cause of amebiasis, is believed to have no continuous endoplasmic reticulum (ER), with ER functions occurring in vesicles. Here, using an ER-targeted GFP-fusion protein and fluorescence loss in photobleaching (FLIP), we have unambiguously demonstrated the presence of a continuous ER compartment in living E. histolytica trophozoites.
