Cover photograph (Copyright © 2009, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved.): Scanning laser confocal microscope image of a living Tetrahymena cell immobilized using the Ringlein differential screw compressor. The image shows putative recycling endosomes labeled green with Gfp::Cda12p and early pinosomes labeled red with the endocytic marker FM-64. The cell has been imaged superficially at the level of the cell cortex within minutes of FM-64 probe addition. At this early stage, red pinosomes are clearly distinct from the potential recycling endosome compartments labeled green with Gfp::Cda12p. This photo was taken with an Olympus BX50 microscope outfitted with a Fluoview FV300 confocal imaging system. (See related article on page 899.)
